Water Softeners
A water softener is a filtration system that significantly reduces water hardness by removing the responsible minerals. It is installed at the water’s point of entry to your home, generally at the pump of your rainwater tank, or where your town mains water line enters the wall of your home (depending on accessibility).
Water hardness is caused by a high concentration of minerals in the water. The main culprits are usually calcium and magnesium. These minerals deposit themselves onto surfaces in your home, including your skin and hair, and bind with soaps and detergents creating soap scum.

The Softener is installed in conjunction with a Whole House Water Filtration system and consists of a Resin Chamber filled with polymer resin beads, and a Brine Tank storing softener salt used to ‘recharge’ the resin.
Minerals carry an electrical charge. As the water runs through the Softener, the resin inside the chamber uses the electrical charges of the minerals, grabbing them like a magnet as the water passes through.
Your water flows through the Whole House Filtration, then the Softener Resin Chamber. After contact through the Resin Chamber, the now filtered and softened water flows to the house for use.

Types of Water Filters

Sediment Filters
A sediment filter provides a barrier to trap physical, insoluble (non-dissolvable) impurities. It is used as a first stage or pretreatment filter and works to catch the largest suspended solids in the water. These larger particles can cause discolouration, turbidity and cloudiness (very common in rainwater) so in adding a sediment filter, you will see an instant improvement in your water’s clarity.
Sediment filters are extremely porous, giving them a very large surface areas. The pores are measured in microns (1/1000th of a millimetre) – the smaller the micron, the finer the filtration. Solids a sediment filter mechanically removes include:

Carbon Filters

Can you use a water filtration system for bore water, tank water or normal town water?
Regardless of your water source (rain, town or bore), there are many potential contaminants. Not only will this affect the quality, taste and smell, but it could also affect the health and well-being of your family. It can also impact your home itself – internal scale buildup in the pipework, plumbing, fixtures and your appliances can reduce their efficiency and lifespan.
Rainwater collects many contaminants as it runs off roofs including dirt/dust, leaves, pollution, animal droppings, and aerial pesticide sprays.
Whereas the municipal water supply has much less sediment, however, it is treated with chemicals e.g. chlorine as part of the disinfection process. While chlorine mitigates bacterial risk, it carries its own possible consequences. Chlorine is dosed to disinfect all potential impurities during its travel through main water lines throughout the town so a residual chlorine level will still be present once it reaches your home to ensure no impurities go untreated (residual or ‘free’ chlorine varying in concentration depending on the area).
