Water Softeners

A water softener is a filtration system that significantly reduces water hardness by removing the responsible minerals. It is installed at the water’s point of entry to your home, generally at the pump of your rainwater tank, or where your town mains water line enters the wall of your home (depending on accessibility).

Water hardness is caused by a high concentration of minerals in the water. The main culprits are usually calcium and magnesium. These minerals deposit themselves onto surfaces in your home, including your skin and hair, and bind with soaps and detergents creating soap scum.

Common symptoms of hard water include:

  • White, grey or brown staining and mineral deposits on plumbing fixtures
  • Soaps & detergents don’t lather
  • Dry, itchy and/or flaky skin
  • Dry, dull and/or brassy hair
  •  Clothes & bedding feel rough or dull
  • Reduced appliance efficiency due to internal scale buildup

Water Softeners are the most effective at improving water hardness by removing the minerals using a process called ‘ion exchange’.  The Softener is installed in conjunction with a Whole House Water Filtration system and consists of a Resin Chamber filled with polymer resin beads, and a Brine Tank storing softener salt used to ‘recharge’ the resin.

Minerals carry an electrical charge. As the water runs through the Softener, the resin inside the chamber uses the electrical charges of the minerals, grabbing them like a magnet as the water passes through.

Your water flows through the Whole House Filtration, then the Softener Resin Chamber. After contact through the Resin Chamber, the now filtered and softened water flows to the house for use.

Under Sink Filters

Our range of under sink filtration systems are cost effective and inconspicuous – they take up very little space under your sink, behind all those cleaning products! Types of Water Filters

We supply a range of filters for our advanced water filtration systems to ensure we can tailor a filtration system specific to your family’s needs and concerns. For multi-stage filtration, we have a couple of different types of filter, each with their own specialisation. After evaluating your home, local area, and your family’s concerns we supply a combination of filters to suit.

Sediment Filters

A sediment filter provides a barrier to trap physical, insoluble (non-dissolvable) impurities. It is used as a first stage or pretreatment filter and works to catch the largest suspended solids in the water. These larger particles can cause discolouration, turbidity and cloudiness (very common in rainwater) so in adding a sediment filter, you will see an instant improvement in your water’s clarity.

Sediment filters are extremely porous, giving them a very large surface areas. The pores are measured in microns (1/1000th of a millimetre)  – the smaller the micron, the finer the filtration. Solids a sediment filter mechanically removes include:

  • Sand
  • Dirt
  • Silt
  • Rust
  • Non-dissolvable iron particles
  • Loose hardwater scale
  • Algae
Carbon Filters

A carbon filter is made of a charred, ground & compressed carbon source – usually bituminous coal, peat or coconut shells. This produces an activated carbon media with a remarkable ability to reduce chemicals, and odours.

Activated carbon filters are porous, the pores are measured in microns (1/1000th of a millimetre)  – the smaller the micron, the finer the filtration. Using a process called adsorption, as water flows through the filter, the activated carbon attracts the contaminants which bond or stick in the pores like Velcro.

Impurities a sediment filter mechanically removes include:

  • Chlorine
  • Chlorination byproducts (Volatile Organic Compounds/VOCs, Trihalomethanes/THMs)
  • Herbicides and insecticides
  • Odours
  •
Carbon water filters
Aragon Filters

The Aragon filter is a remarkably advanced carbon filter combining several methods of filtration (electro-adsorption, mechanical, sorption, ion-exchange, quasi-softening, & bacteriostatic filtration). It’s innovative technology makes it not only the most effective cartridge on the market, but for the widest range of contaminants including:

  • Bacteria & Viruses (>99.984% success rate)
  • Radioactive compounds
  • Heavy metals
  • Chlorine
  • Chlorination byproducts (Volatile Organic Compounds/VOC’s, Trihalomethanes/THMs)
  • Herbicides and insecticides
  • Sediment

The original patents for the polymer material capable of such remarkable filtration was developed in Russia and used extensively after the Chernobyl disaster from 1986. In the following decades it has been extensively tested by several laboratories across Europe to explore its purification abilities, with extraordinary results.

The comprehensive level of filtration methods also means the Aragon filter is brilliant for rain, town, and non-potable water.

Water Filtration FAQs

What is a water filtration system used for?

A water filtration system, whether set up for your entire home or just a point of use (e.g. kitchen sink, shower, etc.), purifies your water supply by removing physical, chemical and microbiological impurities.

Some instant benefits of our filtration system can include:

  • Improve taste & smell
  • Reduce scale & mineral deposits on fixtures & pipes
  • Improve general well-being without the consumption of potential carcinogens & impurities
  • Reduce chemicals irrigating your garden
  • Softer hair & skin with reduced skin reactions & sensitivities
  • Improve the lifespan of appliances & plumbing
  • Better lathering/effectiveness of soaps/detergents
  • Improve dullness/lifespan of clothing & bedding

Regardless of your water source (rain, town or bore), there are many potential contaminants. Not only will this affect the quality, taste and smell, but it could also affect the health and well-being of your family. It can also impact your home itself – internal scale buildup in the pipework, plumbing, fixtures and your appliances can reduce their efficiency and lifespan.

Rainwater collects many contaminants as it runs off roofs including dirt/dust, leaves, pollution, animal droppings, and aerial pesticide sprays.

Whereas the municipal water supply has much less sediment, however, it is treated with chemicals e.g. chlorine as part of the disinfection process. While chlorine mitigates bacterial risk, it carries its own possible consequences. Chlorine is dosed to disinfect all potential impurities during its travel through main water lines throughout the town so a residual chlorine level will still be present once it reaches your home to ensure no impurities go untreated (residual or ‘free’ chlorine varying in concentration depending on the area). Chemical byproducts (VOC’s and THM’s) are also formed in the water when chlorine reacts with a pollutant.

At HC Pure, we supply our own range of water filters and water filtration systems, which can assist in removing:

  • Chemical
  • Pesticides
  • Sediment
  • Bacteria & viruses
  • Hardwater minerals
  • Odours
  • Heavy metals

Providing a seamless service, we take care of everything for you. From the initial quote, to the supply and installation of your system, through to ongoing servicing and support for the lifetime of your water filtration system.
